You sent an invitation, and they replied, "Can't make it this time." You still want to add that it's short and nearby, hoping they'll know they don't have to force it. This page is about letting a "no" stay right where it already made itself clear: explaining more isn't always just extra information — it can also mean making someone say the same no again.
A different angle
A clear no and simply not having answered yet are different things. The first deserves respect; the second might have all sorts of reasons and shouldn't be read as either a yes or a no. You can plan your next step based on the timing, without turning someone's answer into a score on your own worth, and without needing to persuade them that this invitation was worth accepting.

When you get a clear no, just say "Got it, thanks for telling me," and adjust your plans. If it's simply not answered yet, and there's a real need to, you can ask for one clear deadline to confirm by, then handle it based on your own needs after that. Don't add another channel once a no has already been given.
